Percussion instruments have become the focus for Luminous Music’s education programming. We offer experiences that are out of the ordinary, that encourage pupils to create new music, and learn fundamental ideas inspired from several world music traditions. Luminous workshops include access to traditional instruments and music styles of many cultures throughout the world. We have created a whole new vista of music using compelling percussion sounds; examples can be heard on the music samples within this site.

Percussion based workshops offer novice musicians fairly quick access to simple yet powerful musical experiences. Although percussion and gamelan instruments provide an 'easy access' doorway to musical development, there are many challenges to be met. These workshops bring pupils all the benefits of ensemble music making and performance, while presenting rhythmic and tonal complexities. In traditional cultures these same types of instruments are used to devise highly complex music. There is a richness in this dichotomy that can be explored to everyones benefit. The musician is always on a major voyage of discovery. Music both inspires dance and movement, and stirs the emotions at the same time, prompting pupils toward an integration of feeling and thinking.

Creative experiences with percussion instruments are exhilarating for young persons. Have a look at the various pages in our online catalogue to find workshops that develop musical ideas and themes in practical ways for pupils at different age levels. Simply put, the instruments of world culture provide a valuable understanding of other cultures, our own culture, ourselves and our relation to the world.
