PRIMARY SCHOOL MUSIC WORKSHOPS

WORLD MUSIC STORYTELLING
ADVENTURES FOR YOUNG PERSONS

The Luminous World Music programme introduces young children to a fascinating
collection of musical instruments from all over the world. Workshops are
implemented by two or more workshop leaders, working together to bring
multi-level events to participants.
A small-scale event such as The River (Primary 1-2) uses two performers and a
large empty classroom space. This story-making event is a group participatory
experience that can exist as a one-off adventure type session, or as multiple
sessions (usually 2) with the kids making music compositions from the knowledge
gained in the first session.
Large-scale projects such as Pushing Up The Sky are particularly suited to
Primary 3-5. They use much larger spaces and are designed for a maximum of 35
kids per group/session. Themes from various cultural mythologies are chosen for
expansion and updating. Selected stories act as mirrors of social behaviour.
Exploring these themes, music and movement activities are developed or created
by the participants. Workshops such as these can utilise local musicians,
dancers and artists to create a design-rich environment.
Larger-scale events are run using one or two dance-drama animators and several
musicians. They work indoors or outdoors, in half or full day sessions. These
projects can host multiple groups of children from different schools
participating in an event, hopefully over a several day period.
Several of our projects have been chosen for Glasgow's Inspiration Festivals.

For early age primary pupils: Adventure story workshops use music, movement and storytelling to involve the
pupils in discovering the unique and musical sounds of percussion instruments.
The stories are imagination-centred events that stimulate playful and creative
attitudes in music making. Each story session has live musical accompaniment,
aimed to inspire and support the work of the children.
For upper primary pupils: Workshops provide practical group music experiences using drums and percusion
instruments to explore creative music ideas. These sessions provide hands-on
experience with musical instruments. By special arrangement with Gamelan Naga Mas the instruments of the Indonesian
Gamelan Orchestra are available in sessions that provide a special way to look
at world culture, allowing insights into the music typical of South East Asian
cultures.
We design workshops for specific educational needs or requirements. Please
contact us to discuss your needs so that we can customize our workshop for your
group.
