Adventuring into multiple aspects of competition and competitive behaviour, the dancers in Troy Game drive themselves to near exhaustion attempting to outdo one another and keep pace with the music. With choreography by Robert North, Troy Game is energetic and satirical, and a work much loved by audiences. It’s set to music that is primarily based on Batucada, the Brazilian samba style of music that showcases large percussion groups.

The music for Troy Game was adapted and rewritten  for skilled London players by Jon Keliehor. An additional piece of music by composer Bob Downes completes the score, outlining the dance movements of the intriguing Shadow Boxing section. The dance and music grew out of a time in the 1970’s when percussion music was a favourite for dance training classes, and when Jon Keliehor worked as a percussionist along side Robert North and the dancers at London Contemporary Dance Theatre.

This is magic music. Recorded live in 1980, it features the soloistic talents of percussionists Jon Keliehor, Chris Karan, Nigel Shipway, Roger Harrison and the ten percussionists of the Covent Garden Orchestra, as well as a small chamber orchestra.
