World percussion music has brought new knowledge to young musicians and composers in all fields of music.   The tools are at hand - exotic instruments, complex rhythms, and creative tasks that reveal the rhythmic fundamentals within music.

Creative World Drumming is a highly detailed exploration of world music rhythms and rhythmic concepts.  These workshops are offered in one and two hour modules, and focus on various ways in which key world cultures utilise percussion instruments as essential musical resources.

These are hands-on sessions that bring the student into contact with music from Bali, Java, India,  Africa, and Latin America, both from the standpoint of the inherited tradition, and as a study of core musical elements that we use in today’s music, in our own culture. We don’t just talk about rhythm, we play rhythm on many, interesting instruments from around the world.

Essential  musical elements are explored.  We look at the ways in which rhythm mirrors nature, and how rhythms link with cultural expectations.  Our own cultural output can be examined in this light.

Secondary 1-6, Adult,   Six to eight one-hour sessions,    Limit:  25 participants
